9 seconds 👉 how long the average person spends reading an email.
3.96 words 👉 how many words per second the average person reads.

That means that, on average, a person will read 36 words 😴 in an email.

That sleepy emoji…that represents the 36th word of this post. If you’re still reading this, you’ve already read more than most people would read in your mass email.

Here are a few tips to help your message land:

1️⃣ Use brilliant images. You know how a picture is worth 1,000 words? Leverage that.

2️⃣ Use fewer words. Take your 10 paragraph Shakespearean monologue and condense it. ChatGPT is great for this type of work. You can almost always be more concise.

3️⃣ Break up your paragraphs. If you have a message that absolutely must be longer, break it into smaller chunks. A 10 sentence paragraph just looks too daunting. But, three 3-4 sentence paragraphs appear much more consumable. Leverage the psychological benefits of being short and sweet, even if you can’t be.

4️⃣ Use small words. The recommended reading level to target for your mass email ranges from 3rd – 8th grade, depending on who you listen to and who you’re writing for. The general consensus is to aim for a 5th grade reading level.

5️⃣ Create a clear Call to Action at the top of your message. Incorporate a Call to Action into the header image or add a button after a 2-3 sentence paragraph. Your reader will see how consumable it is and be able to quickly decide whether or not your offer is click-worthy.
